About the team

We're a vibrant mix of expertise from the Erasmus Mundus Master's program in "Urban Climate and Sustainability." Comprising individuals with diverse backgrounds in Environmental Management, Social Science, Economics, Architecture, and Urban Planning, our collective goal is to foster co-benefits that enhance both biodiversity and human well-being.

Our vision for nature-positive future for Bangladesh

By 2120, we envision Barishal as a pioneering model of resilience, where Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) are integrated across all sectors to address the multifaceted climate challenges faced by Bangladesh. This vision includes the transformation of Barishal into an ecological haven, catalyzing significant change through the implementation of Comprehensive Ecological Water Management (CEWM). This strategy will effectively manage seasonal floods, combat salinity intrusion, alleviate water scarcity, and enhance food security while preserving biodiversity. Barishal's transformation will feature adaptive infrastructure designed to coexist with the region’s dynamic aquatic systems, supporting homes, roads, and public spaces that are resilient to environmental changes. The economic framework of Barishal will be rooted in sustainable practices, such as backwater eco-tourism and green technologies, fostering a thriving economy that provides diverse and stable livelihoods and conserves its rich natural assets and cultural heritage. The successful implementation in Barishal can serve as a scalable blueprint for the rest of Bangladesh, demonstrating how integrated NbS can transform urban and rural landscapes nationwide, fostering sustainable development and enhancing community well-being across the country. This vision for Barishal aims to inspire and guide similar transformations throughout Bangladesh, promoting a comprehensive and sustainable approach to climate resilience.

Our choices for a specific region

Barishal was selected as our focus area through a comprehensive methodology that integrated GIS analysis, stakeholder surveys, and extensive literature reviews, all confirming its high vulnerability to climate impacts such as flooding, droughts, and river erosion. These assessments revealed that Barishal's diverse environments and significant agricultural base make it particularly susceptible to these issues. To address these challenges, we propose a suite of Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) including mangrove restoration to mitigate flooding and erosion, sustainable agricultural practices to combat drought impacts, and wetland conservation to enhance biodiversity and water quality management. These strategies are designed not only to tackle the immediate environmental concerns but also to bolster long-term resilience and socio-economic stability in Barishal, making it an exemplary region for demonstrating the effectiveness and scalability of NbS in addressing complex climate vulnerabilities.
